Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which is considered an early example of science fiction. She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary began writing Frankenstein at the age of 18 during a famous ghost-story competition with Lord Byron and Percy Shelley at the Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva. The novel explores themes of creation, responsibility, and what it means to be human.
"Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful."
Victor Frankenstein creates life — and unleashes a monster that mirrors his own ambition and guilt.
